When Did You Last Have a Good Night’s Sleep?

Can you help me sleep is THE most asked question of therapists today.  Almost everyone, from stressed out executives to phone addicted teenagers, has trouble getting enough sleep.

We know it’s good for us. We know it’s what we need to feel better, but somehow the 21st century world that we live in makes it very difficult!  Or maybe the way our brains are wired in the 21st century makes it difficult.

Professor Matthew Walker, a leading expert on sleep, says that a consistent seven to nine hours sleep each night is the single most important thing we can do for our health.

Lack of sleep is associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, immune system failure, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, skin problems, and overeating.  A good night’s rest protects you physically and mentally, boosting your quality of life.

Unfortunately, many of us struggle to fall asleep, we wake up during the night, and when morning comes we struggle to get up and then feel constantly tired!  What if you actually understood how your brain works and could somehow “remould” it so that you could get a good night’s sleep?

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Can Help

This is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help, reducing our stress levels and retraining our brain.  In our busy 21st century lives where we are constantly juggling work, finances and family life, never mind a pandemic to consider, we are often too stressed to sleep. When we are very stressed we can become caught in a Catch 22 situation where getting to sleep becomes another stress!  Our brain hijacks our stress response system, flooding the body with fight-flight-or-freeze stress chemicals. The brain becomes super vigilant and obsessive, searching for potential threats. Any little discomfort becomes impossible to ignore.  This leads to shorter sleep duration and frequent waking.  Overall poor quality sleep.

To improve this situation, we need to deal with the stress which is often the root cause of poor sleep.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is proven to be an effective strategy for reducing stress and improving sleep quality.  Underpinned by neuroscience and neuroplasticity (remoulding your brain’s connections) it helps reduce anxiety and stress levels so that you sleep better.

There are two parts to the Solution Focused process – coaching and hypnosis. Coaching helps you understand how your brain works, so that you can make the changes needed. You learn how to access a set of tools that will help you to change the way you think and feel so that you can reduce your anxiety and stress levels.  Hypnosis helps you access a more relaxed state of mind, the Theta state, where your creativity and intuition come to the fore, helping you find solutions to your problems.

Relaxing and Remoulding

Part of the remoulding process is a free relaxation recording. This supports the work we do together and it is also a very useful sleep aid. Our busy minds are often still full of stuff at the end of the day when you want to go to sleep. Listening to this recording as part of your bedtime routine can be very beneficial. It allows the brain to focus on the positive language and imagery guiding you into a state of physical relaxation. Guided relaxation calms the adrenals and allows them to rest, so that they produce less cortisol, the stress hormone.

When we sleep the brain resets itself.  It replays emotional or upsetting events and changes them into narrative memories over which you have control. This happens in our Rapid Eye Movement (REM) dream sleep, 70 to 90 minutes after you first fall asleep.  REM sleep is essential for emotional well-being. During this REM cycle the brain moves in to the “Theta” state, producing the same brainwaves as those we see during hypnosis.

Recent studies by The Clinical School of Hypnotherapy show that Theta waves encode new information, forming new associations between previously unconnected concepts. The theta state helps you to see problems in a new light, distanced from the external world, where a ‘Eureka’ moment can occur.  This is why hypnosis provides the ideal conditions for problem-solving and creativity.

Achieving the change you want

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is oriented to the future, on finding solutions. We don’t focus on your problems or on why you are experiencing negative thoughts. We concentrate on achieving the change you want to see in your life.  If what you most want is a good night’s sleep, we will focus on that.
